Can PEMF Dissolve a Blood Clot? Is It Safe? | Medic Technology International

No — there is currently no robust clinical evidence that PEMF can dissolve an existing blood clot (thrombus), and PEMF should not be used to treat a diagnosed clot.

What PEMF may — and may not — do

A blood clot is a physical mass of fibrin, platelets and blood cells. Established treatments for a clinically significant clot, such as a DVT or pulmonary embolism, are designed to prevent the clot from growing and/or to allow the body's own fibrinolytic system to break it down.

PEMF is different. Some experimental research has examined electromagnetic fields and vascular function, but that is not equivalent to demonstrating that PEMF dissolves a clot in a human patient.

In fact, a 2025 review of static magnetic-field research found that human studies had not demonstrated a statistically significant increase in blood circulation attributable to static magnetic fields.

There is also early animal research suggesting that magnetic fields might influence processes involved in thrombosis, but this is preliminary and should not be interpreted as a treatment for an existing human blood clot.

Is PEMF safe if someone already has a blood clot?

This is where caution is warranted.

If someone has a diagnosed or suspected DVT, a PEMF device should not be placed directly over the affected area unless their treating doctor has specifically approved this.

The concern isn't that PEMF has been proven to "break the clot loose." Rather, there isn't sufficient evidence establishing the safety or therapeutic benefit of applying PEMF over an established thrombus.

It's also important to distinguish PEMF from electrical muscle stimulation (NMES). NMES contracts muscles and can increase venous blood flow, and studies have investigated its use for DVT prevention — but this is a different technology and purpose from using PEMF to treat an existing clot.

Know where — and where not — to apply

PEMF placement matters. Always follow device instructions and a treating physician's guidance around any area with a diagnosed or suspected clot.

If a customer has a diagnosed DVT, pulmonary embolism, or another significant clot, the appropriate approach is to follow their physician's anticoagulation and treatment plan rather than attempting to treat the clot with PEMF.
